Safety production at tailings ponds is a critical component of overall workplace safety and represents a major hazard source. In the event of an accident, it can cause severe casualties, property damage, and adverse social impact. China is a major mineral resource country, with 2,543 tailings ponds currently under the safety production responsibility guarantee system. In tailings pond monitoring systems, reservoir water level monitoring is the most routine monitoring item. Monitoring the reservoir water level allows for timely acquisition of water level elevation data, from which dry beach length, flood regulation head difference, safety head difference, real-time storage capacity, and reserved flood control storage capacity during flood season can be back-calculated. Combined with parameters such as upstream catchment area rainfall monitoring and flood discharge capacity, this provides the most direct and important baseline data for reservoir water level status assessment and early warning forecasting.

The reservoir water level monitoring point should be installed where it can represent the stable water level within the reservoir, generally near the in-reservoir drainage structures (such as drainage wells, drainage inclined troughs, etc.), which facilitates normal data collection during low-water periods. A separate (split-type) unit is recommended, as it allows for convenient on-site commissioning and later data analysis without the need to climb to high positions. Automated monitoring of all tailings pond monitoring points enables comprehensive, round-the-clock real-time monitoring, providing timely insight into the overall safe operating status of the tailings pond.
