Ultrasonic open channel flow meter – effect of improper mounting bracket installation in a Parshall flume
Figures 1 and 2 show improper mounting bracket installation, which causes the ultrasonic signal to hit the channel surface, leading to erroneous water level readings and affecting wastewater flow data. Figure 3 shows proper mounting bracket installation.

Open channel flow meters are now widely used in all municipal water supply and diversion channels, thermal power plant water intake and discharge channels, wastewater treatment influent and effluent channels, industrial and mining wastewater discharge, as well as water conservancy projects and agricultural irrigation canals. Generally, open channel flow meters come in two types: integral and split types. For the split type, the display unit should be installed indoors; if indoor conditions are not suitable and it must be mounted outdoors, it should be placed in a protective instrument box to avoid sun and rain exposure.

Probe installation: The probe of the ultrasonic open channel flow meter can be installed directly above the water level measurement point of the measuring weir or flume. The sound-emitting side of the probe must face the water surface. For a Parshall flume, the water level measurement point is located at 2/3 of the converging section length from the throat; for a V-notch weir or rectangular weir, it is on the upstream side, at a distance of 3 to 4 times the maximum head above the weir plate.
