1. Overview of Ultrasonic Level Gauges
Ultrasonic level gauge (ultrasonic level meter) is a digital level instrument controlled by a microprocessor. During measurement, ultrasonic waves are emitted by the sensor (transducer), reflected off the surface of the object, and received by the same sensor, where they are converted into electrical signals. The distance from the sensor to the measured object is calculated based on the time between transmission and reception of the ultrasonic waves. Since the ultrasonic level gauge uses a non-contact measurement method, the measured medium is almost unrestricted, making it widely applicable for measuring the height of various liquids and solid materials, as well as for distance measurement. In addition to the intelligent LCD display on the local head, the DY series ultrasonic level gauge (ultrasonic level meter) also outputs a standard analog signal of 4-20 mA or high/low alarm (optional RS232 and RS485 digital signal outputs in the latest models).
2. Working Principle of Ultrasonic Level Gauges
Under the control of a microprocessor, the ultrasonic sensor transmits and receives ultrasonic waves, and the distance s between the sensor and the measured object is calculated from the propagation time t of the ultrasonic wave in air. Since the speed of sound in air (c) is constant, s can be calculated using the formula s = ct/2. Furthermore, because the distance H from the sensor to the bottom of the container is fixed, the level (liquid or solid) h = H - s.
