As the ultrasound propagates through the fluid, it encounters impurities such as bubbles or particles (which can be assumed to move at the same velocity as the water flow). When the ultrasound hits these impurities, the reflected wave undergoes a Doppler frequency shift Δf, which is directly proportional to the flow velocity. By measuring the Doppler frequency shift Δf, the flow velocity can be determined.

The riverbed in a natural channel is generally irregular and difficult to secure, and the flow regime is often chaotic, with cross-currents, eddies, and turbulent flow. The measurement point should avoid such conditions. Additionally, since the supporting bracket may need to be relatively long, the installation should be positioned as close as possible to 15-20% of the total river width from the bank.
