A two-wire electromagnetic flowmeter is part of the trend in field instruments for parameters such as temperature, pressure/differential pressure, flow, and level, moving toward two-wire designs where the output signal and power supply share the same wires. Two-wire instruments do not require a mains power supply. Since electromagnetic flowmeters are often installed in remote locations without mains power, using a two-wire configuration can save on the cost of mains wiring.
The power supply design for two-wire electromagnetic flowmeters can be divided into three approaches: supplying power via the zero-signal output current (i.e., 4 mA), supplying power via a signal above zero, and supplying power via battery (or solar cell). Battery-powered electromagnetic flowmeters and electromagnetic water meters are suitable for installations in areas where mains power is difficult to introduce, such as remote city water distribution stations or suburban wastewater treatment discharge points. Some models have a battery life of 1 to 2 years, while others last as long as 8 to 10 years.
