Origin of the Little New Year:

The Little New Year, also known as the Kitchen God Festival, the Stove King Festival, or Dust-Sweeping Day, is a traditional Chinese festival. On this day, people typically do a thorough cleaning, paste Spring Festival couplets, cut window decorations, worship the Kitchen God, and take baths. From this day onward, people stock up on New Year goods and prepare to celebrate the new year cleanly, symbolizing a fresh start for the new year and expressing the working people's beautiful wish to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, and to usher in good fortune and blessings. The date varies by region: in northern China it falls on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, while in most southern regions it is on the 24th day.

Before the mid-Qing Dynasty, northern regions also celebrated the Little New Year on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. Starting from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty, the imperial family held a ceremony to worship heaven on the 23rd day, and to "save expenses," they also paid respects to the Kitchen God in passing.
