How to Resolve Installation and Operation Issues with Ultrasonic Level Meters
Ultrasonic level meter installation mainly involves checking for interference points within the ultrasonic beam path, such as whether it is too close to the container wall, causing sound waves to hit the tank wall, or whether there are protrusions or other installed equipment within the echo path that cause measurement interference. If the interference is fixed, a good ultrasonic level meter is equipped with echo suppression capability, which can record the waveform of the interference points.
When there is liquid, the waveform is compared with the previous waveform to identify the liquid level. The most challenging case is dynamic interference points, such as a thin but thick foam layer on the liquid surface, causing the waveform to gradually weaken without a distinct echo. In such cases, placing a wooden board or similar object on the liquid surface can significantly improve the situation.
Operational issues with ultrasonic level meters:
1. The instrument is inoperable under strong on-site interference: This is due to large fluctuations in the power supply, surrounding frequency converters or strong magnetic field interference, or incorrect grounding. Provide a stable power supply, install the instrument away from frequency converters and strong magnetic field interference, and ensure proper grounding.
2. No display on screen, no sound from the transducer: Check whether the power supply is normal.
3. Keyboard keys are ineffective: Check whether the keyboard connection is normal.
4. The instrument measures correctly at close range but abnormally at long range: First check whether the installation is correct, then check whether the parameter settings are reasonable.
5. Screen error message ERR01: Check whether the probe connection is normal.
6. Large fluctuation in instantaneous flow value: This is manifested as large fluctuations in signal strength and in the measured fluid flow itself. Adjust the probe position to improve signal strength (keep it above 3%) to ensure stable signal strength. If the fluid flow itself fluctuates, the position may be poor; reselect the point to ensure the requirement of 10D upstream and 5D downstream conditions.
7. Relay operation is abnormal: Check whether the relay settings meet the requirements.
8. The instrument displays normally, but the output signal current is abnormal: Check whether the wiring is correct, whether the current load impedance meets the requirements, and whether the central control room module is configured correctly.
9. The instrument cannot communicate with the host computer: Check whether the wiring, ID, communication rate, and communication protocol are correct.
10. Screen error message ERR02: The ID of the probe and the transmitter are inconsistent; set the IDs to match using the keys.
11. The instrument experiences near-end lock-up: Check whether this is a true reflection of the process conditions and whether the parameters are reasonable.
12. After power-on, the instrument only shows backlight without any characters: This is generally due to a program chip failure; it is recommended to return the instrument to the factory for processing.
13. Severe measurement abnormality after running for a period of time: Check whether the instrument has material buildup and clean it promptly.
14. No display at power-on: Check whether the wiring is correct and whether the power is supplied with the correct voltage. Check if there are obstacles between the liquid surface and the ultrasonic transducer (i.e., probe) that block the emission and reception of sound waves. Check if the liquid surface changes too quickly, if there are bubbles or turbulent fluctuations on the surface, and if the probe is installed vertically; if tilted, the echo deviates from the normal line, causing the instrument to fail to receive it.
15. Condensation droplets on the probe: Apply a lubricant to the probe surface to prevent droplets; or install it at an angle to use gravity to remove droplets.
16. No display on the panel but the probe has sound: Check whether the LCD connection is normal.
Ultrasonic level meter During installation, if the probe is too close to the container wall, and the liquid level is slightly unstable, the acoustic path difference between the wall echo and the direct wave becomes small, causing interference superposition, resulting in inaccurate indication. Check whether the mounting bracket is vibrating. If there is no liquid surface, or the liquid level is too high and enters the blind zone, the instrument will have no echo signal.
