Applications of Ultrasonic Open Channel Flow Meters and Selection of Weirs and Flumes
Ultrasonic open channel flow meter is simple to use and widely adopted in open channel flow measurement. It features a variety of transmitter and probe types that can be matched according to on-site requirements, meeting the installation and measurement needs of special environments. The open channel flow meter offers strong anti-interference capability in monitoring.
Ultrasonic open channel flow meter applications and introduction: Open channel flow meters are used in all municipal water supply intakes, cooling water intakes and discharge channels of thermal power plants, sewage treatment inflow and outflow channels, industrial and mining wastewater discharge, as well as channels for water conservancy projects and agricultural irrigation.
Prerequisites for using an open channel flow meter:
1. The on-site channel is a standard rectangular, trapezoidal, U-shaped channel, or a circular pipe.
2. If the upstream gate at the installation point is closed or the pump stops supplying water, the water in the channel at the installation point will drain away without standing water.
3. The upstream of the installation point must have a straight channel at least 10 times the channel width, and the downstream must have a straight channel at least 5 times the channel width, to ensure stable water flow.
4. If there are weeds, debris, stones, or other obstructions in the channel at the installation point, they must be cleared.
The ultrasonic open channel flow meter uses a non-contact ultrasonic probe to measure the water level in the channel, and then calculates the flow rate through a level-to-flow conversion method. Depending on the on-site channel conditions, it can be used with appropriate weirs or flumes (such as Parshall flumes, rectangular weirs, V-notch weirs, etc.) or without them for standalone measurement. It is mainly applied in farmland irrigation channels, industrial discharge outlets, sewage treatment plants, and ecological downstream flow monitoring at hydropower stations.
Weir and Flume Selection
The ultrasonic open channel flow meter must be used with a weir or flume for measurement, typically with a V-notch weir, rectangular weir, or Parshall flume. For flow rates <40l>40 L/S, a Parshall flume or rectangular weir is selected for measurement.
