How Does an Ultrasonic Open Channel Flow Meter Solve the Backflow Problem in Irrigation Canal Sites?
Recently, due to varying site conditions and local technicians lacking installation experience, installation difficulties often arise from various unpredictable factors at the instrument's operating site. To address the common issue of channel backflow and the frequent calculation of false flow data, and to help avoid or limit such occurrences, we provide the following detailed technical guidance.
Details are as follows:

Changshun County Lagan Right Main Canal: 0.88 km

To address the backflow phenomenon in the field irrigation canal, a dual-probe open channel device is specifically designed.
Given the site conditions of the Lagan Right Main Canal—where the upstream channel is short and the maximum flow rate is about 40 liters per second—a rectangular weir is recommended.
When using the instrument for measurement, first calibrate the reference zero point, which is the distance from the probe to the zero point of the water level in the weir tank.
Probe 1 is installed upstream of the rectangular weir and calculates flow by measuring the water level height above the weir crest.
Probe 2 is installed downstream of the rectangular weir to measure the downstream water level and determine whether water is backing up or if backflow is occurring.
If Probe 2 detects a backflow condition—when the water level rises—the flow meter main unit will, through background settings, stop calculating the flow rate.
This is because the upstream water flow over the rectangular weir is already affected by the downstream backwater, resulting in false flow readings.

As shown in the figure above, installing and using the dual-probe open channel measurement setup can effectively avoid erroneous measurements caused by downstream backflow. False flow readings will no longer occur, resolving a long-standing issue for many customers.
Changshun County is under the Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, People's Republic of China. The county government is stationed in Changzhai Town, located in the central-southern part of Guizhou Province, in the western part of Qiannan Prefecture. The total area of Changshun County is 1,543 square kilometers. The scenery is beautiful!
