How to Properly Install and Use a Doppler Flow Meter at River Channels and Gate Openings
Recently, for the ultrasonic Doppler flow meter flow measurement project in the Qingbaijiang River basin of Chengdu, the customer adopted our recommended movable bracket installation and cable conduit protection measures. The on-site bracket fixing and cable protection were really well done!

The following are two different installation locations.


During our technical exchanges and guidance with customers, we are often asked about the installation methods for Doppler flow meters. At the same time, there are also inquiries about the ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter for measuring downstream water flow at gates. For installation convenience, they want to install it directly at the gate opening. But is this location choice reasonable?

For example, the disadvantage of installing at this gate opening is that when the water level is too low, it can cause inaccurate or unstable measurement values, bringing inconvenience to backend personnel in observation and handling. Even with automatic upload and intelligent acquisition, there is still some inaccuracy, which also diminishes the advantages of the smart product itself and may lead customers to mistakenly think the product has issues, when in fact it is due to improper installation causing measurement errors.
If installed downstream of the gate, special attention should be paid to observing the water surface to see if it is stable. If the sensor installation location is already a distance of10 times the channel width from the gate, but the water surface is still not stable, then the distance between the sensor and the gate needs to be increased until the water flow becomes stable. The longer the straight section, the better.
Because within a certain distance downstream of the gate, there is usually a reinforced concrete channel that is relatively regular. Many sites choose to install the sensor relatively close downstream of the gate for convenience, but this area generally has turbulent and chaotic flow, resulting in measured data that deviates significantly from the actual flow velocity. Therefore, it is not recommended to install in such locations.
The ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter must be measured in a location with stable water flow.
