Why Sponge Cities Need Sewer Flow Meters and Ultrasonic Doppler Flow Meters?

Since the start of May this summer, 12 consecutive rounds of heavy nationwide rainfall have struck most provinces and cities across China. Torrential rains have come one after another, and many cities have once again entered "sea-viewing" mode. On May 16, rainfall in Chongqing drove local water levels up to 101 mm; Hefei's Fangxing Lake, overwhelmed by floodwaters, spilled onto Fangxing Avenue; in Foshan, Guangdong, a scenic area of 112,000 square meters turned into a giant water park; and in a single day, Shanghai received the equivalent of 21 days' worth of rain in a normal year. Hangzhou was also hit by heavy rain, receiving the equivalent of 40 West Lakes' worth of water in just 12 hours. 

After all these years of "sea-viewing" every summer, we can now respond quickly to urban waterlogging. But it also raises the question: rather than reacting passively each year, why not tackle the root cause by upgrading urban drainage systems and eliminating the hazard permanently?

In recent years, the national government has gradually begun to pay attention to this issue and respond proactively.In 2011, the Ministry of Water Resources issued a requirement for all cities to strengthen flood control planning;in 2013, the State Council also issued a notice on strengthening urban drainage and waterlogging prevention planning, requiring all cities nationwide to make proper plans for drainage and waterlogging prevention systems;in 2015, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Ministry of Finance launched16 pilot projects for sponge city construction, and starting this year, central finance will provide funding support for the "sponge city" pilot projects for three consecutive years.

The reason many cities get flooded every rainy season is that during emergencies like torrential rains, the speed of rapid drainage cannot keep up with the rate of water accumulation. Municipal departments have been trying various measures to improve this situation, such as increasing drainage pump stations and enlarging drainage pipe diameters. Because drainage flow meters can accurately and efficiently measure pipe flow rates, this capability makes the (drainage flow meter, also known as sewer flow meter) very important in the overall urban drainage network.

There are many common types of drainage flow meters, among which the more common is the ultrasonic Doppler flow meter. It is a non-contact instrument that measures flow by detecting the effect of fluid flow on an ultrasonic beam. It can measure flow in large-diameter pipes as well as in media that are difficult to access or observe, such as in large pipe sections and river channels.

Municipal drainage flow meters (Doppler sewer flow meters) can not only function in urban drainage systems but also be applied in industries such as steel, metallurgy, water supply and drainage, petroleum, chemical, food, and agricultural irrigation.

As an urgent urban hazard to be solved, upgrading drainage systems cannot be delayed, and building sponge cities will also become the next market growth point for flow meter instruments and similar products. This is an opportunity, but it also poses a new challenge for the instrument industry at the technical level. While meeting market demand, how to effectively leverage high-end technologies such as the Internet to improve measurement accuracy and create smart cities is the next development goal for all regions, and it also requires greater efforts from flow meter manufacturers to provide more advanced and technology-driven products.
