Dayu Electronics: Can a Doppler Flowmeter Control Valve On/Off? The Key Is Here
“Can your Dayu Electronics Doppler flowmeter directly control our start valve switch based on flow rate?” This is the most frequently asked question recently by clients working on water conservancy automation or energy-saving retrofits.
The answer is: yes, but the user needs to set the flow threshold themselves. Our Doppler flowmeter can output a switching signal, which can be directly used to control pumps or start/stop valves, but the precise setting of the flow threshold must be confirmed by the customer. Relying solely on water level judgment cannot achieve accurate control.

Our ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter comes with a built-in switching output function, so it is entirely feasible for controlling pump start/stop or valve on/off. However, many field personnel tend to fall into a trap here—they habitually want to use water level as a substitute for flow judgment. This approach does not work with a Doppler flowmeter.
Why doesn’t it work? Because the principle of Doppler flow measurement determines that flow rate is calculated from “water level + flow velocity.” If you only look at water level and ignore velocity, flow rate becomes an unknown. For example, with the same half-pipe water level, the flow can differ by several times depending on whether the water moves fast or slow. If you only set a water level value, the flowmeter has no idea what the current velocity is, so it cannot calculate the true flow, and the output switching signal will naturally be inaccurate. At that point, the valve may not open when it should, or it may keep discharging water when it should close, causing the control system to malfunction.

Therefore, the correct operational logic is as follows: You need to understand your site conditions in advance and define the “trigger flow value” you want. Based on this value, we set the corresponding threshold in the flowmeter. That way, once the real-time flow monitored by the flowmeter reaches your preset critical point, the switching signal will activate immediately, precisely controlling the valve or pump.
