Dayu Electronics: Can the Doppler Flowmeter Do Without the Main Unit? Here's How to Choose for Greater Peace of Mind
Field engineers often ask us: Can a Doppler flowmeter be installed with just the sensor at the front, without the display main unit? The answer is yes. Once the main unit is removed, the front probe is what we commonly refer to as the "Ultrasonic Doppler Flowmeter". Its core measurement parameters and functions remain unchanged, and it can still accurately capture water flow velocity.

However, this "subtraction" approach is more suitable for users with a certain level of technical expertise. If you simply need to measure flow velocity, the sensor can be directly connected to an existing data acquisition terminal (RTU), and data reading is not complicated. But when it comes to flow calculation, it is not that simple. Flow calculation needs to incorporate parameters such as water depth and cross-section shape. Originally, these algorithms were built into the display main unit. Without the main unit, we need to write the algorithm program into your on-site data acquisition device, or directly embed it inside the sensor.

This process requires a high level of on-site commissioning. Typically, you need to bring a serial cable and a laptop to the site, and our technical staff will provide remote or on-site guidance to modify the embedded parameters and algorithm logic based on actual conditions. This not only tests the operational skills of on-site personnel but also increases the initial deployment difficulty.

In contrast, the solution of keeping the display main unit is much simpler. The main unit acts like a "smart calculator" — you simply input the pipe diameter, channel width, or custom cross-section data via the keypad, and it automatically calculates the flow rate and displays it in real time. The entire process requires no programming and no connection to a PC, significantly lowering the barrier for installation and maintenance. This is especially suitable for projects that require frequent adjustments or have high personnel turnover.

Therefore, if you pursue maximum system integration and have a professional on-site maintenance team, choosing the "sensor-only + embedded algorithm" solution is entirely feasible. But if you prefer a device that is ready to use out of the box and want to reduce long-term maintenance costs, keeping a display main unit is undoubtedly the more worry-free and reliable choice.
