The New Standard for Smart Water Utilities: Dayu Electronics Launches Integrated Multi-Parameter Monitoring Solution for Sewage Manholes
Urban sewage pipe network operating conditions are complex and variable. Manholes not only experience dynamic water flow changes, but can also accumulate toxic, hazardous, or flammable/explosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. Traditional manual inspections struggle to promptly capture transient flow anomalies and gas leak risks. To address this, Dayu Electronics has launched an integrated monitoring solution combining an "Ultrasonic Doppler Flowmeter + Gas Monitoring and Alarm Device," which utilizes an RTU remote data transmission unit to report key indicators in real time to the local housing and urban-rural development department's comprehensive management platform.


In this solution, the flow velocity sensor of the ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter is installed inside the inlet pipe of the manhole. This sensor operates on the Doppler shift principle, emitting ultrasonic pulses into the water. By receiving the frequency change of the echoes reflected by suspended particles or air bubbles, it calculates the fluid flow velocity. Combined with the built-in pressure or ultrasonic level measurement unit, the sensor can simultaneously acquire four key parameters: instantaneous flow velocity, cumulative flow rate, liquid level height, and medium temperature within the pipe. As the sensor is installed using clamp-on or insertion methods, there is no need to cut off the pipeline or alter the water flow pattern, significantly reducing construction difficulty and subsequent maintenance costs.

Concurrently, a gas monitoring and alarm device is wall-mounted on the inner wall of the manhole. Equipped with electrochemical or catalytic combustion sensors, this device continuously detects concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH₄), or oxygen within the manhole. Should any gas concentration exceed the preset threshold, the alarm unit instantly triggers local audible and visual alerts, and sends an alarm signal to the RTU via relay or digital communication interface. The design of synchronized dual-parameter monitoring not only ensures the safety of workers entering the manhole but also effectively prevents secondary accidents caused by gas leaks.

Both the ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter and the gas alarm device aggregate real-time data to the on-site RTU remote terminal unit via RS485 (Modbus RTU protocol) or wired analog output. According to the sampling frequency and message format specified by the local housing department, the RTU packages and encrypts data on flow velocity, flow rate, liquid level, temperature, and gas concentrations, uploading it to the comprehensive management platform over 4G or NB-IoT wireless networks. Through the platform, managers can remotely view dynamic curves for each monitoring point, receive threshold-exceedance alarm notifications, and obtain quantitative decision-making support for drainage network scheduling, flood prevention warnings, and gas risk prevention and control.

Currently, this combined solution has been operating stably at multiple municipal sewage pipe network demonstration sites, achieving the goals of "simultaneous water and gas measurement, and remote supervision."
