Dayu Electronics: Analog and Switching Outputs of Ultrasonic Distance Sensors
In fields such as industrial automation, equipment positioning, and security monitoring, Dayu Electronics' ultrasonic distance sensor is widely used in various distance detection scenarios due to its non-contact and highly adaptable characteristics. When selecting and debugging wiring, users often notice indicator lights of different colors on the sensor. The difference between the green and yellow indicator lights directly corresponds to the two most basic signal output modes. Understanding their meaning is key to correct application.

In simple terms: the green light typically indicates analog output mode, while the yellow light indicates switching output mode. These two modes serve completely different control requirements.
When the sensor indicator light is green, it indicates that the sensor is operating in analog output mode. In this mode, the sensor outputs a current (e.g., 4-20mA) or voltage (e.g., 0-10V) signal that is continuously and linearly proportional to the measured distance. The control system (e.g., PLC) reads this continuously varying signal to calculate the exact distance to the target in real time. This is suitable for scenarios where the "exact position" of an object needs to be known for continuous control, such as warehouse shelf height monitoring, precise correction of workpiece position on a conveyor belt, or follow-up control in glue application equipment.

When the sensor indicator light is yellow, it indicates that the sensor is operating in switching output mode. In this mode, a distance threshold (adjustable) is preset inside the sensor. The output is only a simple "on/off" signal (e.g., NPN or PNP). When the measured object enters or leaves the set range, the output state changes. It does not provide a specific distance value but only a "yes/no" judgment. This is very suitable for simple position detection, presence detection, or safety protection, such as material presence triggering on a production line, automatic door opening/closing, or intrusion alarms in dangerous areas.

How to choose: Match your core requirements
? If your application requires continuous reading of precise distance values and possibly calculation or proportional control based on that, choose analog output (green light) mode.
? If your application only needs to trigger an action when the object reaches a specific position, choose switching output (yellow light) mode.
Many modern ultrasonic distance sensors already integrate both output functions and are configurable. The indicator light color serves as an intuitive working status identifier. By understanding the meaning of the green and yellow indicator lights, you can quickly match the sensor to the control system requirements, ensuring effective signal integration and stable system operation.
