Monitoring solution using ultrasonic sludge level meter for the sedimentation tank of Fuzhou Minqing WWTP
In September 2025, addressing the sludge level monitoring requirements of a square sedimentation tank at a wastewater treatment plant in Minqing County, Fuzhou City, and based on the site-specific operating conditions, an ultrasonic sludge level meter (with dedicated mounting bracket) manufactured by Fuzhou Dayu Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. was selected to establish a real-time sludge level monitoring system for the sedimentation tank, providing accurate data support for sludge discharge operations.

The monitoring target of this project is the sludge sedimentation tank within the plant. The tank has a square structure with a total height of 3.9 meters and receives yellowish-brown sewage daily. The core requirement is to real-time monitor the sludge level height in the tank to determine whether to initiate sludge discharge, thereby avoiding negative impacts on sedimentation efficiency due to excessively high sludge levels, or system operation and maintenance issues caused by delayed sludge discharge. Given the dark color and suspended impurities in the sewage, along with the need for continuous and stable sludge level monitoring, an ultrasonic sludge level meter was ultimately determined as the core monitoring equipment.

To adapt to the site conditions, the system adopts an installation method of "instrument + dedicated mounting bracket", fixing the ultrasonic sludge level meter probe below the water surface of the sedimentation tank via the bracket. This installation method avoids surface-level interference from yellowish-brown sewage on ultrasonic signals while ensuring the probe remains in an effective monitoring position. During selection, the tank's total height of 3.9 m was fully considered to ensure the measurement range of the sludge level meter covers the sludge level variation interval in the tank, meeting the full-range monitoring needs from low sludge levels to near the tank bottom.

To ensure measurement accuracy and stable equipment operation, two core requirements must be emphasized in field applications: first, the probe's emission surface must be regularly inspected and cleaned to prevent impurities or contaminants from forming obstructions, avoiding measurement deviations caused by surface contamination; second, when fixing via the bracket, the installation height must be precisely adjusted to ensure the probe is always below the lowest water level, preventing the probe from being exposed above the water surface due to water level fluctuations, which could cause monitoring interruptions or data distortion.

After system operation, staff can read the sludge level data of the sedimentation tank in real time through the instrument, judge the accumulation of sludge based on the data, and promptly initiate sludge discharge operations, avoiding the lag and subjectivity of manual inspections. The entire solution, with equipment selection that matches on-site operating conditions and precise installation standards, provides reliable support for sludge level monitoring of WWTP sedimentation tanks, helping to enhance sludge treatment efficiency and the refined level of plant operation and maintenance.
