Open Channel Flow Meter for Stormwater Pipe Network Flow Monitoring in an Industrial Park [Dayu Electronics]
I. Project Overview
To improve stormwater management efficiency and ensure the proper operation of the drainage system, an industrial park decided to monitor the flow of a DN200 stormwater drainage pipe. Considering the dimensions of the drainage manhole channel (60 cm wide, 80 cm deep), the project selected a Parshall flume No. 5 equipped with a split-type open channel flow meter to achieve accurate, real-time flow monitoring.
II. System Design
Monitoring point selection: Monitoring points were selected at key nodes of the park's stormwater pipe network to ensure representation of the overall stormwater discharge.
Equipment selection:
Parshall flume: Parshall flume No. 5 was chosen for its compatibility with the manhole channel dimensions, enabling the formation of a stable critical flow to ensure measurement accuracy.
Open channel flow meter: A split-type open channel flow meter was adopted, offering easy installation, accurate measurement, and remote data transmission.

III. Implementation Steps
Site preparation: On-site surveys were conducted at the selected monitoring points to ensure the installation locations meet requirements, and foundation work was performed.
Parshall flume installation: Parshall flume No. 5 was installed in the manhole channel, ensuring levelness and sealing to prevent leakage.
Open channel flow meter installation: The flow meter was connected to the upstream of the Parshall flume, and the split-type open channel flow meter was linked to the park's monitoring center for remote data transmission.
Data calibration: The stage-discharge relationship curve was calibrated based on actual conditions to improve measurement accuracy.

IV. Application Results
Real-time monitoring: With the split-type open channel flow meter, real-time monitoring of the stormwater pipe network flow was achieved, providing strong support for stormwater management.
Accurate measurement: The combination of Parshall flume No. 5 and the open channel flow meter significantly improved measurement accuracy and reduced errors.
Remote monitoring: Monitoring data are uploaded in real time to the park's monitoring center via wireless transmission, allowing managers to view and analyze data anytime for decision-making.
Environmental adaptability: The equipment operates reliably even under harsh weather conditions, meeting the stormwater pipe network flow monitoring needs.

V. Case Summary
In this case, the successful application of Parshall flume No. 5 and the split-type open channel flow meter provided an efficient and accurate solution for stormwater pipe network flow monitoring. Through real-time, precise data monitoring, the park's management can better grasp stormwater discharge conditions, optimize the stormwater management system, and enhance the park's flood control and drainage capacity.
