To guard against this "crisis underfoot," relying solely on manual inspections and experience is far from enough—you need a pair of "eagle eyes" that can see through the water.

In this type of monitoring, the two most important indicators are: changes in riverbed elevation around the steel pipe piles and water flow velocity. Our recommended solution for customers is straightforward—the M80 Echo Sounder paired with a Doppler Current Meter. One handles underwater terrain, the other measures flow velocity, together giving a clear picture of scour risk.

The M80 Echo Sounder acts like an underwater "ruler." It uses acoustic ranging principles, emitting ultrasonic pulses through a transducer. The pulses bounce off the bottom and are received by the same transducer, and the device calculates water depth based on the round-trip time of the sound waves. That may sound technical, but in simple terms, it measures distance by "sending out a sound and listening for the echo"—except we use ultrasound, which is fast and stable in water.

Another major highlight of the M80 is its dual-frequency sonar technology at 200kHz/50kHz. The high frequency provides finer detail in shallow water, detecting small-scale terrain changes; the low frequency offers stronger anti-interference capability, making it suitable for deep water or water with high sediment content, with significantly better bubble interference rejection than traditional equipment. The device also features a built-in dynamic sound speed correction module that calibrates in real time based on water temperature and salinity, ensuring accurate measurement data. Its housing achieves an IP68 protection rating, so underwater operation is completely worry-free when it comes to water ingress.

Our Doppler Current Meter, on the other hand, acts like a "weather forecaster" for water flow. It monitors flow velocity using the Doppler effect—in short, the sensor emits a beam of ultrasound into the water, which reflects off suspended particles or bubbles. The faster the water flows, the greater the frequency shift of the reflected sound wave, and from that shift we can calculate the flow velocity. This current meter covers a measurement range from 0.03 m/s to 5 m/s, with the option to customize up to 10 m/s. It achieves an accuracy of ±1% and a resolution of 1 mm/s, capturing even the slightest changes in flow. Water depth measurement is also integrated into the same unit, with a range of 0 to 10 meters and ±0.5% accuracy. One sensor collects both flow and depth data seamlessly.

With this solution, we enable continuous monitoring of scour depth and riverbed elevation changes around the steel pipe pile foundations.
