Dayu Electronics: M36 Underwater Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Suddenly Loses Data During Testing? Check If It Entered the Blind Zone
Recently, a customer reported an issue: the M36 underwater obstacle avoidance sensor worked normally at the start of testing, but after lowering it a bit further, data suddenly disappeared. The customer was puzzled and assumed the device had malfunctioned.
In reality, it is likely not a malfunction but the sensor entering its blind zone.

When an ultrasonic sensor operates, the transducer needs a brief moment to "switch" from transmitting sound waves to receiving echoes. During this extremely short transition, the distance close to the transducer surface cannot be measured—this is the blind zone.
The M36 sensor you are using has a 20-meter range, and its blind zone is approximately 15 to 20 centimeters. In other words, if the sensor is less than 20 centimeters from the bottom, it cannot receive echo signals, so data naturally disappears.

So when this happens, don't rush to suspect the device is broken. Simply raise the sensor a bit so the transducer is more than 20 centimeters above the bottom, and data will most likely recover.
If data still doesn't come back after raising it, then contact our technical staff for further troubleshooting.
The blind zone is a physical characteristic of all ultrasonic sensors—it is not a quality issue, nor is it an isolated case. When selecting and using the sensor, just reserve this distance, and it won't trouble you.
