Dayu Electronics: M36 Ultrasonic Ranging Sensor Meets New Demands for Underwater Robot Distance Measurement
In recent years, with the widespread application of underwater robots (ROVs) in marine engineering, underwater inspection, pipeline patrol, and other fields, accurately measuring the distance between robots and obstacles has become a critical factor in ensuring operational safety and enhancing autonomous obstacle avoidance capabilities. The Dayu Electronics M36 series ultrasonic ranging sensor, with its solid acoustic detection technology and excellent media adaptability, provides a reliable ranging perception solution for underwater robots.

Recently, a customer presented a specific application scenario: they needed to measure the distance from an underwater robot to a steel plate in relatively clear water, with the required measurement range within 1 meter. To address this need, the Dayu Electronics technical team evaluated the options and recommended the M36 series model with a transducer frequency of 1 MHz.

Why choose the 1 MHz frequency? In underwater ranging, the choice of transducer frequency directly affects measurement accuracy and blind zone performance. The 1 MHz frequency provides good directivity and resolution in clear water, allowing effective capture of reflected echoes from the steel plate surface. The acoustic impedance of steel is much higher than that of water, so when ultrasonic waves travel from water to the steel plate surface, the interface reflection coefficient is extremely high, resulting in strong reflected signals. Even at close range within 1 meter, the sensor can reliably capture echoes and output precise distance data. Additionally, this model features a blind zone as low as 5 cm, maintaining high measurement accuracy and continuous output capability within the 1-meter detection range, fully meeting the needs of underwater robots for short-range obstacle avoidance and position sensing.

The M36 series sensors operate on the principle of ultrasonic echo ranging: the sensor emits ultrasonic pulses into the water; these pulses reflect off obstacles such as steel plates; the sensor receives the echoes and calculates the distance between the robot and the target based on the time difference. The M36 sensor employs an efficient acoustic transmission and reception mechanism, enabling rapid identification of obstacles ahead within short to medium ranges. Its design fully accounts for the unique conditions of underwater environments, offering excellent adaptability to temperature variations and water turbulence. Furthermore, the M36 series comes standard with an RS485 output interface supporting the ModBus-RTU protocol, allowing users to flexibly configure sensor parameters as needed and achieve seamless integration with underwater robot control systems. With an IP68 protection rating and robust construction with superior sealing, the product is well-suited for prolonged underwater operations.
