International Labor Day, also known as "May Day" or "International Workers' Day," is a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the world. It is celebrated on May 1st each year and is a holiday shared by working people worldwide.
The origin of Labor Day: The 8-hour workday we have today was won for us by workers 134 years ago.
May 1st on the solar calendar is the annual International Labor Day, a worldwide celebration. On this day 134 years ago, more than 200,000 workers in Chicago, USA, staged a massive strike to fight for a standard 8-hour workday. It was precisely because of this large-scale strike and the bloody struggles of many that we now have the 8-hour workday and Labor Day.
In July 1889, the Second International, led by Engels, held a congress in Paris. The meeting passed a resolution stipulating that international workers would hold demonstrations on May 1, 1890, and decided to designate May 1 as International Labor Day. In December 1949, the Government Administration Council of the Central People's Government made a decision to designate May 1 as Labor Day. After 1989, the State Council has basically commended national model workers and advanced workers every five years, with around 3,000 individuals honored each time.
134 years have passed, and today we are about to enjoy the Labor Day holiday again. As people take time off to travel and relax, will they think back to that day in 1886 when more than 200,000 workers took to the streets to strike and demonstrate? Will they remember them and be grateful to them?
